In UNISON, Black is used to indicate people with a shared history. Black with a capital ‘B’ is used in its broad political and inclusive sense to describe people in Britain who have suffered colonialism and enslavement in the past and continue to experience racism and diminished opportunities in today’s society.

Surrey County UNISON are working to improve equality in the workplace for Black workers and challenge racism and discrimination in the workplace.
Tackling discrimination means that we support our members when individuals experience racism and discrimination in the workplace, but also means that we tackle the deep-rooted systemic barriers that Black members face.
We remain committed to improving the situation for Black workers, and are working with the County Council to ensure the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is a priority, and delivers measurable change across the county, ensuring that Black people are better represented across the workforce.
